So the news just broke that Tim Duncan and his wife have filed for divorce (although the story hasn't been confirmed yet). There are a lot of reason why this story bothers me, aside from the fact that the Spurs are so close to making the NBA Finals.
First off, Tim Duncan has been the face of the Spurs since the departure of David Robinson. Those were big shoes (literally and figuratively) for him to fill. Mr. Robinson has done so much for San Antonio and continues to be a big influence in our community. So it feels like Timmy has been expected to live up to that. While I think he has done his part, he has remained more private than I thought he would. You don't see him in tabloids or anything like that. In fact, the only controversy he's had was that infamous picture of him holding a shotgun to "Joey Crawford" at a Halloween party. Other than that, he's been a saint. And I think that would lead the fans to believe that Tim Duncan has the perfect life, the perfect marriage. And now that it seems like his marriage is in jeopardy, it's just a big disappointment.
Tony Parker and Eva Longoria divorcing wasn't as big of a deal as this. They were in tabloids here and there (more so her than him). They were apart a lot due to their work schedules and both were rising in fame at the time. Tony was becoming an icon in his home country of France and Eva had "Desperate Housewives". While you can blame their divorce on Tony's infidelity, they still lived the Hollywood lifestyle and we don't expect Hollywood marriages to actually last. So it wasn't that big of a shock when they filed for divorced. But Tim Duncan getting divorced, that just doesn't sit right with me.
Having been born and raised in San Antonio, my love for the Spurs is deep rooted. Even though Marcelo was born passed his due date, I was psyched that he was gonna be born on Tim Duncan's birthday. We were even put in room 21! However, due to doctor wanting Hope to have a vaginal birth, they delayed the c-section until after midnight. So unfortunately, Marcelo wasn't born on April 25. But I feel like he has a lot of similar traits as Timmy. He's super calm and chill like Tim. He handles his business (eating and pooping) like Tim handles his business (playing basketball). He's quite simply a Champ, like Tim. So I have some personal attachment to Tim Duncan and I just hate to see someone of his stature go through something like this.
And finally, there's always the "If Tim Duncan gets divorced, then anyone can get divorced" thought. I mean, he's accomplished so much. He should be happy and should have his family right there with him. I have achieved some accomplishments in life, but nothing as grand as being a multiple NBA Champion and MVP. While I know I can't compare my life exactly to his, I still wonder what's gonna keep Hope from leaving me (aside from cheating). It's just one of things that really hits home.
Despite the news, I still have faith that everything will work out for Tim. Both on and off the court. Go Spurs Go!
